Overview
Among all the states in India, Tamil Nadu has the highest number of accredited universities. As per latest statistics released on 22 June, 2012, the state has a total of 55 universities. Among them, there are 2 central universities, 24 state universities, and 29 deemed universities. All of these universities are either accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) or the National Accreditation Board (NAB). In order to introduce complete transparency in the enrollment, the government has emphasized on merit-based admission procedure. Spreading education among women is another concern of the state government. At present, the percentage of women enrolled in postgraduate and undergraduate programs are 45% and 55% respectively.
